The Cemetery and chapel is named after St. Roch, a medieval saint who ministered to plague victims. The Chapel is truely unusual, hundreds of mementos of cures attributed to St. Roch line the walls – Shoes, braces, crutches, and replicas of body parts line the walls…Others say they are objects of Voodoo as ceremonies were once supposed to have taken place here.

The above ground graves or “Vaults” are due to the climate and stormy nature of Louisiana, and “Oven” vaults in the brick wall are as small of Post Office boxes. Trip advisors recommend visiting New Orleans cemeteries in groups as most other cemeteries in the city are vast and are a playground for thiefs and thugs who who know the cemetery maze like the back of their hands.
