When I first arrived in New Orleans I was kind of on edge…I’ve heard too many stories about N’awlins and its bad rep for crime and violence. But I guess like any big city you have to pick your places carefully and don’t act a fool. The post-Katrina-ness is still evident with all the abandon buildings, cracked pavements and overgrown plants on the streets, you soon learn it’s also due to the climate and the city is just plain old, everything is broken or smelly. You quickly love the character of the city.
I neighbourhood I was staying was the famous “Garden District“, a lot of the buildings here are new and were rebuilt to resemble the character of the original homes of Louisiana, for example, where you once had kerosene lanterns you now have gas lanterns. Making a city centre walk or a trip to the French Quarter only 20 minutes by foot – and I did that everyday without any sour encounters.
