Kampung Ayer, Brunei

For centuries, Bruneians harvested the bounty of the seas, forging a way of life that is still strongly evident in the lives today

There are 30,000 inhabitants of the Kampung Ayer (water village) in the capital. Centuries-old web of homes, markets, mosques, schools, medical clinic, police and fire stations hovers on stilts over the shallows of Brunei River.

Today you can spot satellite dishes and air-con boxes strapped on to bamboo frames and men in suits off to work. [video]
